Robert and Vanessa Crowe are processing some difficult news – Robert is in heart failure, but not a candidate for a transplant. After lots of testing and evaluation, both at Memorial Satilla Health and a research hospital in Atlanta, he’s headed home with a rare medication to keep his heart functioning.

The couple says the compassionate care and honest communication from physicians, nursing staff and their case management team have made all the difference as they navigate this diagnosis.

“Memorial Satilla takes care of the whole family, not just the patient,” Vanessa said. “One of our doctors even cried with me out in the hall.”

“They will pull up a chair and tell you what you need to hear,” Robert adds. “I can’t say anything bad about the care here.”

“Hospice is a hard word to hear, but it’s our way of getting the medicine and care that we need right now,” Vanessa explained. “Our doctor told us, ‘Go home and enjoy your family. Take each day your given and don’t worry’,” she continued. “They’ve been nothing but honest, and that’s all we’ve asked for.”

The couple look forward to getting ‘some sugar’ from grandbabies and relaxing with their children. After more than a month away from home, Robert is ready to rest in his own bed. “I’m tired of being a pin cushion,” he said with a chuckle.
