All things work together for good. Longtime Alma businessman Linton Carter says he’s living proof of that Biblical promise.

Ninety-one-year-old Carter recently completed a stint at Memorial Satilla Health’s inpatient rehabilitation facility where he was treated following a stroke.

“I’ve had an excellent experience,” Carter says. “Rehab is challenging, but my care has been very good. It’s an excellent place, very aggressive treatment.”

Carter is excited to go home, but will miss his caregivers. “They have been so nice,” he says.

Carter will be in excellent hands at home, too with loyal caregivers Jose and Gricelda by his side. Carter and his late wife of 66 years, Harriet, never had children of their own, but his care team couldn’t be more loyal if they were related.

And, for good reason.

Sixteen-year-old Jose is the perfect picture of health and youthful vitality now – you’d never know he suffered from leukemia as a toddler. The Carters came to the aid of Gricelda’s struggling young family by shuttling Jose back and forth to treatments in Savannah while his parents worked.

“We had no children, but they are my children,” Carter says. “God worked it out where we could have children in our old age.”

In recent years, Gricelda cared for Harriet as her health declined, even moving into her bedroom to care for Harriet through the night in her final days. Now, Jose is doing the same for Mr. Carter.

“God orchestrated all of these events,” Carter says. “They’ve not missed a single day of visiting me here at rehab.”

Carter operated a TV sales and repair shop in Alma for more than 50 years before retiring.
