Before your surgery
Before treatment, you will meet with the surgeon or surgical team to review your medical records, complete a physical examination and evaluate your need for surgery. They will also discuss the potential risks and benefits of the surgery.
If your doctor determines that surgery is the best option, they may request that you complete certain tests. For example, you may have a blood test to identify your blood type in case a blood transfusion is needed. In addition, you may be asked to go to our radiology department for an imaging scan.
Tips to prepare for surgery
We recommend you consider the following before your procedure:
- Check with your insurance provider to find out whether you need to get pre-approval of insurance coverage before the surgery.
- Talk with your doctor to learn what you should or should not eat or drink during the 24 hours before surgery.
- Be sure to mention any medications and dietary or herbal supplements you are taking, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
- Consider bringing a family member or friend on the day of surgery. After the surgery, your doctor will provide them with an update about how it went.
- Arrange for care during your recovery phase, including transportation home from the hospital.
What to wear and bring to your surgery
When you arrive at the hospital, you may be asked to change into a hospital gown or remove clothing or jewelry that could interfere with the surgery. Leave valuables at home or with a family member in the waiting area. If you wear contacts, we recommend you wear your eyeglasses on the morning of your surgery.
What to expect after surgery
After surgery, your recovery time depends on the type of surgery and what kind of anesthesia is administered. For example, patients who have received local anesthesia may be able to go home shortly after the procedure.
Patients who received regional or general anesthesia are monitored carefully in a recovery room until it wears off. This usually takes one to two hours. When your condition is stable, you will either be transported to your hospital room or discharged home.
Follow-up appointment
Before you leave the hospital, you may be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment so your doctor can monitor your ongoing recovery. In addition, it is important to follow recovery instructions from your doctor or nurse, and contact your healthcare team if you have any questions.
Post-surgery rehabilitation
If rehabilitation is necessary after surgery to help you rebuild strength or regain certain skills, our physical and occupational therapists can help. Our physical therapy and rehabilitation unit offers expert specialists and state-of-the-art equipment to help you get back to your normal activities as quickly as possible.
